Lauren Belfer returns to Larkin Square, May 15th, 2017

The Larkin Square Author Series is pleased to welcome back to Larkin Square and Buffalo, Lauren Belfer. Buffalo’s beloved author has invited Frank Kowsky and Stephanie Crockatt to join her in a conversation titled, Buffalo’s Olmsted Legacy: Past, Present, and Future. The talk will include historic images of the Olmsted Parks which inspired Ms. Belfer’s writing in City of Light.

Lauren Belfer is the author of the best-selling novels City of Light, A Fierce Radiance, and and After the Fire.  City of Light is set in Buffalo. Much of the story is set in Olmsted designed parks in Niagara Falls and in Buffalo. This will be Ms. Belfer’s fifth time speaking at the Larkin Square Author Series. This will be her first talk with a thematic subject.  She has invited Olmsted scholars Frank Kowsky and Stephanie Crockatt to join the conversation. Audience members will be encouraged to ask questions as well.

Frank Kowsky is the author of The Best Planned City in the World: Olmsted, Vaux and the Buffalo Park System.  Stephanie Crockatt is Executive Director of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy.

Right Here, Right Now: The Buffalo Anthology, April 26th, 2017

The Larkin Square Author Series is pleased to welcome to Larkin Square in a new role, as writers, the musicians Mary Ramsey, John Lombardo, Robbie Takac, and Jeff Miers in conversation with Jody Biehl on Wednesday, April 26th at 5:30 pm They will be speaking (and perhaps playing a little music)  about their written contributions to Right Here, Right Now: The Buffalo Anthology (Belt Publishing, 2016) edited by Jody Kleinberg Biehl.

Mary Ramsey and John Lombardo are members of the alternative rock bank 10,000 Maniacs and the folk-rock band, John & Mary and the Valkyries. They have performed numerous times in Larkin Square playing at the Wednesday KeyBank Live at Larkin Series. The 10,000 Maniacs played at the opening of Larkin Square in 2012.  John and Mary each write about what inspires them about Buffalo.
Robby Takac is the founding member of four-time Grammy nominated, 10-time platinum-selling rock band The Goo Goo Dolls. He’s also the owner of Good Charamel Records and GCR Audio Recording Studios and the founder of the Buffalo-based not for profit Music Is Art.

He writes about creating the Music is Art festival and the organic way the community rallied for arts programming. Larkin Square has been proud to support Music Is Art through numerous instrument drives. Guests at the April 26th talk are encouraged to bring a musical instrument to donate to Music is Art.  Donated instruments will be refurbished and distributed to students in need.

Jeff Miers, is a musician and the music journalist and pop music critic for the Buffalo News.

He writes a nostalgic romp through “Buffalo’s cultural underbelly its old, weird, blurry blend of avant-guard art and punk rock, its boozy clubs that smelled like stale cigarette smoke, sweat and urine, its cheap apartments in Allentown, its air of artistic permissiveness…its acceptance of the fact that nothing was guaranteed and everything was allowed.” Jeff has also performed numerous times at the Wednesday KeyBank Live at Larkin series.

Jody K. Biehl is the editor of Right Here, Right Now: The Buffalo Anthology. The book contains essays written by numerous writers with a Buffalo connection, including past Larkin Square Author Series writers Lauren Belfer and Margaret Sullivan.  Jody will lead a panel discussion with Ramsey, Lombardo, Takac and Miers on their contributions to the anthology.

What’s New Harry? Larkin Square Author Series, February 8, 2017 at 5:30PM

The Larkin Square author series is delighted to welcome Paul Ranallo to the Larkin Square Author series to speak about his book, What’s New Harry?, on Wednesday February 8th, from 5:30 pm to 6:45pm.

The book focuses on the columns written by Paul’s father, Phil Ranallo who was a beloved sports writer for the Courier Express.  While his columns focused primarily on sports at the time, they also chronicled life in Buffalo.  Read More

Murder in Buffalo! Larkin Square Author Series, January 11th, 2017, 5:30pm

Winter is a great time for reading and the return of the Larkin Square Author Series on Wednesday January 11th  from 5:30pm – 6:45 pm at the Filling Station in Larkin Square.

Kicking off the winter series will be Buffalo based writers Jeff Schober and Matt Smith. Each have written mystery books set in Buffalo.  This will be Jeff’s second appearance in Larkin Square and Matt’s first appearance in the series. Read More
